Double is a somehow complex concept, ignored by many and loved by few..
It's a very dangerous idea and should not be tried in uhls with people you don't know that well!
Why? Because it requires the whole team to act as one and therefore only possible if the 3 players know which others fairly well (or if they all have great understanding of how doubles work).
Before we really start I'd like to say: DROP THE IDEA THAT DOUBLE IS A NEWBISH THING!
Ok, with that said, a double is one of the most effective ways
to steal a ball.
Doubles have an extremely misguiding name and that's probably why most users don't get it. As I said, a double is actually a "safe triple", with two guys "rushing" the ball carrier and the third guy covering everything that's left open by the "rushers".
The point of the double is to put pressure on the ball carrier so he has to make a slow enough pass/clear to be intercepted by the lastman! yes, you will end up stealing the ball before he actually tries to clear BECAUSE he understands that clear is useless and tries to control it.
I'd also like to say that a double needs to be fast and unexpected, leading the ball carrier the panic and throw the ball away!
-------
So, we have 3 roles:
The guy who rushes (
Rusher)
The guy who was defending him before the double (I'll call him "
Solo" in this guide)
The
Last man
I'll now explain which one separatly, read carefully:
Rusher
This player is the one who will judge when is the best time to double(I'll explain this later)! He will rush BY THE SIDE THAT IS OPEN, covering a possible pass line to the man he was previously marking.
Some of the most common mistakes made:
Well, there aren't really many, because the rusher is normally someone already familiar with doubling, but since this is a guide I'll list some things you should keep in mind:
Don't Ignore the man you were previously marking. (always know where he is and be sure there isn't an easy pass to him)
Don't go to the place where the solo is! you're the one who needs to go to the open place!
Don't forget the bounce! This is extremly important! I've seen some times people trying to double and completly giving an
easy bounce pass!
Solo
This player will prepare the double! As rusher, Solo will need to judge when and when not to get a double ready! it has to "feel" the game and predict if the rusher will double or not! If you knows there's a good time to double, cover one side, and let the other one open so rusher can join you! (Don't cover one side totally.. just do it a bit so your mates can see there is a chance to double, and get ready to do the rest once the rusher decides to double)
Some of the most common mistakes made:
Some times the solo moves to the other side when the rusher is coming, because he thinks it will work better if the rusher is on his position and he covers the other! Yes, it may be true! but you should've thought of that earlier and should've started closing the other way before the rusher got there! moving at the last second will make you fuck up the double! Know how to communicate with your teammates through your ships!
Lastman
Don't confuse this type of lastman with the normal one! In this case you may leave an attacker behind if you feel that he has no chance to get the ball once you cover the "remaining pass lines"
This player won't D a man!
"Will he D two?"
hmm not exactly.. In a way, yes! but what he will really D is an area!
Lastman will see which are the remaining passes or dangerous clears that are left open by the solo and the rusher.. It's not as easy as it may sound because there's a lot of thing you have to keep in mind..
Some of the most common mistakes made:
This is probably why most doubles won't simply work! because last man don't know how to double! He will probably be the one saying "DONT DOUBLE YOU NOOBS!!!!!!" when it was really his fault! This man needs to have full understanding of the game! which passes are possible, how quick can the ball go once it is passed by the ball carrier, where can the double "break" and needs to be ready to slow down the attackers etc etc etc
This man is so important as the other two!
And remember, this "lastman" doesn't need to be the one who's closer to your goal! The rusher and the last man could be any of the two players who aren't defending the ball carrier!
-------
(While I was writting the roles, I felt like saying "This is the most important man!" on every one of them.. just so you see how important everone is)
-------
Now that you know roles I'll explain the 3 phases of the double:
Phase 1 - Get ready!
Phase 2 - YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Phase 3 - Get the ball!
Phase 1 - Get ready!
This is when the whole team suddenly understand they can double! the solo will move slightly, the rusher will move closer, and the last man will keep defending normally, but will be ready to go to his position once they start rushing!
Some of the most common mistakes made:
Last man sometimes go to his position in this phase, before the ball carrier is pressured, resulting on a pass on his back leading to a goal.
People sometimes take too long in this phase, allowing the ball carrier to understand what's going on and thus avoiding the double!
Rusher and Solo didnt leave clear who will D which side! as I said, normally the rusher goes to the open place, lets say they are like this:
Normally, you'd expect the rusher to cover A, because you were already at B, but if you think about it, it will work better if solo covers A while the rusher goes for B! remember, it needs to be fast to scare the ball carrier! if he's expecting it maaaay work.. but if you tell him "HEY WE'RE GONNA DOUBLE, HOLD ON WHILE THE RUSHER GOES TO HIS POSITION lolz!!1" it won't work!
Phase 2 - YAAAAAAAAAH!
That's a battle cry, if you're wondering..
This is when the things happen! the rusher suddenly covers one side, the solo covers the other side,
closing ALL easy pass lines! the only thing that you let open is an easy clear to the place where lastman is waiting, or an harmless clear to his defensive zone!
The last man goes to his position a covers the "clear area" while keeping an eye on a possible "break" on the double and be ready to slow down the attackers if such thing happens!
Last man will get any possible pass, leaving only those long clears! (that pass to the other side seems like something that should be blocked, and it is in fact <.< if you see the man behind you moving to get that pass, close it! if he passes between you, the last man will still get it because the blue ship is now moving to D!
Some of the most common mistakes made:
Oh boy.. this is where things go wrong! rusher and solo normally focus on closing everything! it's not possible! you have to know where your last man is, what area he's covering, and allow lame clears to that zone! focus on strong and fast passes! remember, your point is not to steal the ball(even though you will end up doing so more times than not)! It's to make him try to pass and your lastman will then get it!
Other things that usually go wrong is allowing the ball carrier to bounce between you and proceed attacking 3v1; lastman staying awaaaaaaay ignoring the double because he believes it's a 2 man job and so on.. there are a lot of things that can happen! practice with your squad on v3 games until you know how to do this part..
Phase 3 - Get the ball!
Sounds easy because the hard work is all done, but if you forget it, it was a total waste! seems stupid but it does happen!
Some of the most common mistakes made:
Solo and rusher, hold your mouses! point it to a place where last man can get it, or pass it to the rusher/solo if they're already with space! it's really stupid to get the ball and then stupidly giving it back to them because you didn't hold the ball and tried to grav when your and the opponents ship weren't moving!
Lastman, be careful, don't miscalc the ball trajet(?)! when you move to get it, you WILL HAVE to get it! this is not time to try to get it at high speed to have a cool counter-attack! get the ball as fast as you can with full security! missing the ball is going from a 3v2 to a goal for them! wich is stupid after all that work.
--------
When to double?
Obviously, on 2v3s! If they're 3rd man is somewhere (undangerous), double! Remember, don't just rush there with two men! Do it fast, but think about what you're doing and know what your teammates are doing!
When they have a player so close to the ball carrier, that it's possible to cover him completly by rushing the ball! Remember, "completly" isn't really gonna happen, there will always be that slow bounce pass or something, but that's lastman's job! If the lastman will be able to D an area that cover that lame pass, and the pass to the guy he was marking, do it!
^ this is why I'm always telling my teammates to go away and get open! if you're close and you're not blocking to get the pass, then go away! otherwise the ball carrier will get doubled and lose the ball and it will be YOUR fault!
It's also possible to do on 3v3 when you surprise a less skilled ball carrier.. but you're risking too much!
Now I'll post some double situations..
most of these are extremely dangerous because the man who was defending as last man, is the one rushing keeping in mind all the pass lines.. with the perfect timing, these situations are extremely effective! don't abuse of them.. once every 3 games, when the perfect ocasion comes, and you see a not-so-skilled-ballcarrier and choose to surprise him!
gay circle is the area that lastman can cover, S=solo, R=rusher, L=lastman.. white arrows are passes/clears, blue/red is the ship movement:
in this one, the rusher surprises the attacker by leaving his man alone! while the last man boosts to cover the pass between them!
notice how the rusher chooses to cover the bounce pass leaving the pass between them for the lastman to catch!
Solo moves to the side closing the bounce, while the rusher goes to the place where the solo initially was! The last man covers the pass between them, again!
this attack is really similar to the above one, but this time the man who was defending as last man is the one rushing , surprising the ball carrier!
In this one the ball carrier needs to be surprised! if he sees it comming = goal! the lastman (forgot to put an "L" on the red spot <.<) covers that whole area, forcing them to lose the ball or clearing it
This one is quite common.. when they're attacking 2v3, the two closer defenders rush him leaving only a gay shot between them that will be easily intercepted by last man..
(it's also common to the rushers to cover the shot and the pass, leaving last man with a possible bounce shot)
and lastly we have this one I already posted somewhere in this guide:
the most common and safe, and basically the only one you might wanna do in serious games
and that's basically it!
Remember: It's a 3 men job! Good timing is needed! Needs to be fast and accurate!
The reason why this shouldn't be done in most uhls and stuff like that a little mistake made by someone WILL BE a goal for the other team! judge well and double carefully!
I think that's all!
